Geneva band students competed in the Association of Texas Small School Bands Competition (ATSSB) with several qualifying to compete at the Region 29 Band Clinic and Concert at Burnet High School in January.

Students who have qualified to participate at the Region 29 event are Cleo Bretz (flute), Brandon Strickland (bassoon), Will Bower (clarinet), Trevor Higgs (trombone), Holden Abdullah (tuba), Jack O’Quinn (tuba) and Evan Schaefer (percussion).

The ATSSB is under the umbrella of the Texas Music Educators Association and is the small school version of All-State for 1A through 4A classifications in public and private schools. The ATSSB Area 29 includes high school musicians from Boerne, Comfort, Bandera, Fredericksburg, Burnet, Johnson City, Lampasas and other surrounding towns.

In addition, Abdullah, Bretz, Bower, Higgs, O’Quinn and Schaefer advanced to the Area auditions, which will be held on January 13 at Richardson High School. Students who place in the top spots at the Area contest will have the opportunity to perform in the All-State Band at the TMEA Convention in February.

“It is so exciting to see Geneva band students prepare difficult music and compete at a high individual level,” Geneva Music Director Gradi Evans said. Evans and Erin Thomas direct the Geneva band.
