The Geneva School varsity competition cheerleading squad placed third in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division I (Small Squad) State Cheer Competition held in Waco, November 29 and 30. Several members earned individual recognition as well. Sophomore Natalya Pedraza was named First Team All-State. Second Team All-State honors went to junior Avery Baggs and sophomore Corley Petrie.
TAPPS has two divisions for cheer competition—Division I combines all 4A, 5A and 6A schools in Texas while Division II combines all 1A, 2A and 3A schools. Within Division I, there are three categories depending on squad size: Small (up to 13 members), Medium (14-16 members) and Large (17 or more members). Division II has two categories: Small (up to 11 members) and Medium (12 or more members).
The top six squads in each category earn points for their school for the TAPPS Henderson Cup. Geneva School earned six points for third place.
“This is such an amazing accomplishment for our young squad with no seniors and I’m head over heels proud of my girls! Their determination and dedication has blown me away and they proved that what they set their minds to, they go after without hesitation! We exceeded our team goal of placing in the top four and came out in third place,” Geneva Head Cheer Coach Amber Jonas said.
The squad is coached by Amber Jonas and Devanee Chapman.
