Highlights from this Week’s Fly By
Welcome to the Fly By with Callyanne McCrea
School Theme for the Year
This year’s theme is Hope from Psalm 71:5:
“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.”
Key Reminders
- Hot Lunch Hot Lunch ordering for the month of January closes today, Monday the 8th.
- Fine Arts Christmas Concert Join us tonight, December 8th, for the Logic and Rhetoric Fine Arts Christmas Concerts in the MPB. Logic is at 5:30 and Rhetoric is at 7:00.
- GGG Lunch The Geneva Grandmother Gathering will take place this Wednesday, December 10th at 11:30 at Club Giraudat. Today is the deadline to RSVP– Check the Landing for more details.
- 8th Grade Oratory Prelims Join us for the 8th Grade Oratory Prelims this Thursday December 11. One of the most significant and highly anticipated parts of the 8th grade year is the Oratory Presentation; this is a longstanding tradition in the Logic School. This project represents a culmination of skills students have been developing throughout their classical education thus far: thoughtful reasoning, clear communication, and confident expression of truth. Finals will be Monday, December 15–stay tuned.
- Grammar School Christmas Program Assembly The Grammar School Christmas Program Assembly is this Friday, December 12th . As a reminder, students are encouraged to wear dressy Christmas attire. Please plan to stay for the fellowship coffee following the program!
- Annual Fund The Annual Fund supports campus improvements and investments in our people that are above the school’s annual operating budget. Did you know that 50 faculty and staff attended the Society for Classical Learning this past summer because of gifts to professional development? Your generosity to the Annual Fund creates a richer classroom experience for your students. See Leslie Moeller’s message about this opportunity to partner with Geneva in this way. Please consider a gift before December 31.
This Week in History
On December 15th, 1791: The first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, were ratified. They were added to ensure that the government was not imposing on the freedom and rights of the people. Current 5th graders haven’t learned the Bill of Rights quite yet, but if you are a graduated 5th grader at Geneva, say them with me now! 1- freedom of speech, religion, and the Press, 2- right to bear arms, 3- No Quartering of Soldiers, 4- Freedom from Unreasonable Searches, 5- The Right to Remain Silent, 6- The Right to a Speedy Trial, 7- The Right to a Jury in Civil Cases, 8- No Cruel or Unusual Punishment, 9- Rights Kept by the People, 10- Powers Kept by the States.
Did You Know?
Did you know that Geneva’s mascot, The Eagles, was voted on by Geneva students in the early days? It’s a perfect mascot that has inspired many of the names you see around campus like the different school newsletters, the Eaglet’s Quill, and even this weekly podcast to list just a few.
Fun Faculty Fact
Dr. Eric Covington, Bible Department Head, Bible Instructor and Debate Coach is a man of many talents. Some of you may have heard him share about church unity during the inaugural Lyceum lectures last week, but you may not know these facts. He got to pet a live cheetah, lived in Scotland for four years, coached a year of Logic soccer, and dabbles in 10 different languages. What a spread of talent. We are so thankful for Dr. Covington’s wisdom and love for learning!
