This Week in History
On January 7th, 1990 the Leaning Tower of Pisa was closed for repairs because it was leaning too much. The tower was built over a 200 year span between 1173 and 1372 AD, but with only 20 years of actual work. The reason for the lean is because it was built on a shallow foundation and soft ground. Sounds biblical to me! During its closure, soil was removed from the raised side of the tower and a correction of 18 inches was achieved. It is now tilting at approximately 3.97 degrees and was said in 2013 that it will be stable for at least 200 years.
Did You Know?
Did you know that over the summer our classrooms got new beautiful artwork? What you surround yourself with matters. Here at Geneva we believe in having classrooms that reflect the good, the true and the beautiful. Starting in Grammar school, we study great artists through our docent program. When we renovated the Logic and Rhetoric classrooms, we wanted to incorporate Classic works from many of those artists our students have studied since they first began at Geneva. Next time you’re over in Logic or Rhetoric, take a second to admire the different prints and the stories they tell.
Fun Faculty Fact
3rd grade teacher, Stacy Arnold, knew at 8 years old that she wanted to be a teacher. She even has a book in her classroom library called ‘all about me’ that talks about how much she wants to be a teacher when she grows up! After graduating college Mrs. Arnold taught school in London, England, Marbella, Spain, San Antonio, and Los Angeles before landing at Geneva! After all these different experiences, Mrs. Arnold says teaching at Geneva is by far her favorite! She states, “ I get to be with 8-year-old students all day who have endless enthusiasm for simple things like extra recess, water coloring, ice cream Fridays, singing about Olympic gods, and beating their teacher in math facts!
