This Week in History
October 20th, 1803 – The U.S. Senate approved a treaty with France providing for the purchase of the territory of Louisiana, which would double the size of the U.S. Facing war with Great Britain, Napoleon decided to raise money for his war by offering to sell the entire territory to the U.S. for a mere $15 million.
October 21st, 1879 – Thomas Edison successfully tested the first practical electric light bulb at his lab in New Jersey. Edison didn’t invent the idea of electric light — others like Joseph Swan had working bulbs before him — but Edison made it affordable, reliable, and ready for mass production. His team tested thousands of materials before landing on a carbonized bamboo filament that burned for over 13 hours. Edison’s work led to the development of entire electrical systems: generators, wiring, and sockets — not just the bulb. The original bulb created by Edison is preserved at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.
Did You Know?
Did you know that our Annual Booster club fundraiser, Shootout and Talons Up, began in 2010 to raise money for academic, athletic, and fine arts competition? It has raised over 1 million dollars and it is entirely parent and volunteer led. This year it falls on Friday, October 24th and we hope to see you there!
Fun Faculty Fact
Grammar School executive admin assistant, Beverly Johnson, is in her 27th year working at Geneva. She and her husband Danny, have two Geneva alumni daughters, Sarah (class of 2011) and Lydia (class of 2012) and she is called ‘Honey’ by her two precious grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson started at Geneva as a third grade teacher, with a class of three students, moved to the school’s admin assistant, and then moved again in 2001 to her current role. She remembers the early days as everyone being all in, spending late nights turning classrooms into Sunday school classrooms and then back into classrooms again. She is known for her lovely handwriting and her desire to make all things beautiful. We are so thankful for Mrs. Johnson’s faithful service here at Geneva.
