Highlights from this Week’s Fly By

Welcome to the Fly By with Callyanne McCrea

School Theme for the Year

This year’s theme is Hope from Psalm 71:5:
“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.”

Key Reminders

  • EagleFest On behalf of GCL, we would like to thank everyone for their support at EagleFest last Friday– This would not be possible without all the parent volunteers. What a fun day to watch the community come together and we hope you had as much fun as we did! Proceeds support GCL’s community-building programs such as GAP, back to school events, teacher appreciation activities and educational forums. We are so grateful to GCL and for the huge difference they make in the community life at Geneva! Thanks GCL!
  • Parent Survey Please review Mrs. Moeller’s message on Friday reporting the Fall Parent Survey Results. We are grateful that so many parents gave feedback and that our net promoter score continues to rise showing our parents’ excitement about the education their children are receiving at Geneva.
  • Veterans Day Assembly Please join us tomorrow, November 11 at 8:30am for the Veterans Day assembly in the MPB. So many sacrifices have been made for our freedom here in America and it is a privilege to honor our veterans for their service. Please bring your veteran grandparents, friends or neighbors. Guests are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
  • Tuition Assistance Now is the time to apply for tuition assistance for next school year. The deadline is Tuesday, December 16th to be considered in the first round of tuition assistance. Check The Landing for contact info.
  • GCL Fall Forum Mark your calendar and plan to come for the GCL Fall Forum on November 17th at 8:30am in the Lyceum to hear “Stories of Hope from God’s Faithfulness in the Classroom.” In this season of thanksgiving, let’s gather to hear a panel of teachers share stories of hope from their classrooms and how they see Jesus at work in the lives of their students.

This Week in History

On November 10th, 1951 the first direct-dial long distance phone call was made in the US– a call from the New Jersey Mayor to the California Mayor. Before this moment, all long distance phone calls were made through what were called switch boards. These switch boards were large panels with rows of jacks, cords and plugs and were operated by human operators, mostly women called ‘Hello Girls’. The process to connect a call was much slower and it meant that your phone call could be listened in on. See season 6 episode 12 of Little House on the Prairie for a visual. The operator would get the call and then manually plug cords into the correct jacks to connect the two callers. Just a little different than how we make phone calls today. Ask your grandparents or great grandparents if they remember these times.

Did You Know?

Did you know that there are 15 Geneva alumni serving in the military, including two in elite forces in the U.S. Army? Zach Scott, Class of 2018, is an Army Ranger in the 75th Ranger Regiment and Lawrence Mixon, Class of 2015, completed the Special Forces Qualification Course to join the Green Berets.

Fun Faculty Fact

Nicole Lawson, IT Systems Support Analyst, has quite the professional background. She spent 2 years in Korea in the military working on security systems on Air Force bases. She also spent some time in Wyoming working on security systems that guarded nuclear weapons. Mrs. Lawson has greatly contributed to Geneva in so many ways, keeping all of our computers operating, answering hundreds of questions, and always remaining so calm, happy and peaceful. One very notable contribution was when she helped set up everything to allow for virtual classroom streaming in the fall of 2020. Her favorite thing about being at Geneva is being able to work in the same place where two of her children go to school, Addy and Ellie.
