This Week in History
On January 31, 1958 the United States launched its first satellite, Explorer 1, into space. A collaboration between the Army and the University of Iowa, was a significant contribution in the Space Race. Explorer 1 transmitted data for an estimated four months but orbited around the Earth for 12 years. It circled the Earth 58,376 times before burning up as it reentered the Earth’s atmosphere. The point of launching this satellite into space was to gather information about the Earth’s upper atmosphere and radiation environment. This satellite led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, zones of energetic particles trapped by the Earth’s magnetic field, and paved the way for NASA.
Did You Know?
Did you know that junior Caleb Quitadamo has been named the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division III Quarterback of the Year?
Additionally, Geneva’s Head Football Coach Bob Rosenstiel has been named the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division III Coach of the Year. Under Rosenstiel’s leadership the Geneva Eagles varsity football team reached the TAPPS Division III Semifinal Game where they lost to Lubbock Christian.
Fun Faculty Fact
Head Football Coach, Bob Rosenstiel, was a tight end for Eastern Illinois University before he went on to play tight end for the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as in the XFL for the New York/New Jersey Hitmen.
After his time in the NFL and XFL he coached high school football for one year as Tight End Coach at Napa High School in California, three years as Receiver Coach at Vintage High School in California, and three years at Geneva School of Boerne as offensive line coach, wide receivers coach, special teams coordinator for two years, and Head Coach for track, before becoming the Head football coach at Geneva.
As Athletic Director Trent Nesmith said, “We are so thankful to have Coach Rosenstiel’s extensive playing and coaching experience, combined with his commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field.”
