This Week in History

In light of the winter Olympics that ended last night, on February 23rd, 1980 American speed skater Eric Heiden attained a historic sweep at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics by winning his fifth gold medal. He won gold in the 500m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m all in the span of 9 days. In these events he set five Olympic records and one world record. He is the only skater in history to win gold in all five distances in a single Olympics and in the 1980 Lake Placid Games, his five gold medals were the only individual gold medals won by the United States. After his incredible speedskating career you may have thought he would sit back and consider his athleticism had reached its peak, but he did not and it had not. Eric began cycling where he won a national championship and competed in the 1986 Tour de France. And to top it all off, after all of that, he pursued a medical degree from Stanford Medical School and today, Heiden practices as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.

Fun Faculty Fact

Second grade teacher, Amy Gordon, is in her 14th year at Geneva. Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Gordon received her CPA license, which made her a Certified Public Accountant. After practicing accounting for 3 years, she decided to go back to school to get her teachers certificate and proceeded to teach in public school for 6 years. She graduated from Trinity University, lived in San Antonio and Medina before moving to Boerne in 2009 and soon after, started teaching at Geneva where both of her sons graduated. Wright in 2018 and Philip in 2024. Mrs. Gordon loves to read, walk her dog Sheba, who is the queen of their house which is fitting with a name like Sheba, hike, serve at her church, solve math problems, puzzles, and can even solve a rubik’s cube. Now, that is impressive!

Mrs. Gordon says that her favorite thing about her job is getting to share about Jesus and pray with her students every day.
