This Week in History
On March 6, 1836 after 13 days of fighting, the Battle of the Alamo came to an end after a short 90 minutes, marking a pivotal moment in the Texas Revolution. Mexico was victorious in sieging the Alamo, where nearly 200 Texan defenders died– including Texan leaders William B. Travis, James Bowie, and Davy Crockett. Meanwhile, Sam Houston, commander of the Texas forces, was developing his army and “Remember the Alamo” became the rallying cry as a reminder to avenge their defeat. Just a short 6 weeks later at the Battle of San Jacinto, Mexico and Texas fought again and this time Texas was victorious, winning independence from Mexico and ending the Texas Revolution.
Did You Know?
Did you know that Logic School Debate is back for the second year after a long hiatus? When Head of School Leslie Moeller returned to Geneva last year, she wanted to revive this tournament and bring back the opportunity for our Logic School kids to practice what they learn in Logic class. During the tournament last week, each team had 6 rounds to either defend or oppose AI’s influence in Classical Christian Education. Both judges and students expressed how grateful they were for the return of this event– yet another great addition added by Head of School Leslie Moeller.
Fun Faculty Fact
Human Resources Director, David Rodgers, has been in HR his whole professional career. However before his career began, as a young boy and highschooler Mr. Rodgers was in two bands, ‘The Sensational Down Beats” and church group “The One Way Singers” where he sang and played the keyboard. He graduated from Baylor University where he started a student association ‘Bahr’ which stands for Baylor Association Human Resources. This organization is still running at Baylor, 47 years later. In college Mr. Rodgers opened a Christian Bookstore in his hometown, Marshall Texas. He is quite the entrepreneur. After graduating from college, he worked in various different places in HR including Neiman Marcus, Mary Kay, Fidelity Investments, American Funds, Guidstone before coming out of retirement to work at Geneva. Mr. Rodgers’ son, Luke, was a Logic school humanities teacher here and was responsible for leading his dad to apply for the newly opened HR job. With a 13th on the way, Mr. Rodgers has 12 grandkids who know him as papa.
As the HR Director, he loves being a part of the full effort around Classical Christian Education. He loves providing support that influences students as they learn and grow and especially loves watching the community come together with their individual giftings and the enthusiasm of students and families. Thank you Mr. Rodgers for bringing your joy and giftings and for serving this school so very well.
