This Week in History

September 17, 1787 – At the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, delegates from twelve states voted unanimously to approve the proposed U.S. Constitution. What was supposed to be a meeting to revise the Articles of Confederation– the nation’s first system of government– turned into a meeting that produced a brand new document. This new Constitution established the three branches of government: Legislative, Judicial, and Executive. 238 years later, the U.S. Constitution is still the foundation of our government.

September 18, 1947 – The U.S. Air Force was established as a separate military service, which was previously a part of the Army Air Forces (AAF). This change was made with the growing importance of air power and the decision that the Air Force needed their own command structure and leadership.
