This Week in History
On May 5th, 1862 Mexican forces unexpectedly defeated the French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Did you know that this victory is where the celebration Cinco De Mayo began? Contrary to popular belief, Cinco De Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day and the official holiday’s name is “The Day of the Battle of Puebla’– Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue like Cinco De Mayo does. In the 1860’s Mexicans living in California heard about the victory and decided to hold celebrations to honor the bravery and over time, the holiday became a way for Mexican-Americans to celebrate their heritage with music, food, and decor.
Did You Know?
Did you know that Non Nobis, Geneva’s beloved anthem, was first introduced in the early years of Geneva? This anthem was to inspire our students, faculty and parents to live, serve and work to the glory of God and not for our own glory. Non Nobis is Latin for “Not to us, not to us, O Lord but unto your name give glory” from Psalm 115:1. We sing this anthem throughout the school year to remind us that what we are doing individually and collectively at Geneva is unto the Lord. Former head of school, Brad Ryden introduced this song in 2011. The stone outside of the lyceum is inscribed with the words of Non Nobis. This was a gift that was given by the class of 2013.
Fun Faculty Fact
1st Grade teacher, Lunden Myers, was a very involved highschooler. She held a leadership title for 8 different organizations including a math club, a program called Girlz for God that brought junior high girls together to talk about the Lord, and an organization called FCLA, Family Career and Community Leaders for America. On top of all of that, she showed rabbits and steers from third grade all the way through senior year of high school in Orange Grove Texas. In Junior high, she donated 16 inches of her hair to Locks of Love! Miss Myers grew up with many unique pets her family found and saved including two deer, a turkey, white pigeons, guinea birds, snakes, an assortment of reptiles, all the farm animals and the classic dogs and cats. After graduating from Texas A&M, she taught for two years before coming to Geneva and is currently in her 3rd year here. Miss Myers favorite thing about her job are the students and their smiles.
