This Week in History

On May 17, 1939 the first televised college baseball game was aired in the US. The game was between Columbia and Princeton at Baker Field in New York City, with Princeton taking home the victory. There was a single camera on a 12 foot stand down the third-base line with somewhere between 400-500 televisions sets receiving the signal. The picture on the tv sets was reported to be blurry, with the ball rarely being seen, and the players looking like ‘flies’. Televisions today have come a long way.

Did You Know?

Did you know that the GK Chesterton Award is given each year to the Outstanding Senior Thesis Presenter? These students are eligible for consideration for the award based on their research, written work, and presentation. This does not necessarily mean that students under consideration have the top grades in the Senior Thesis class. Rather, they are nominated for this honor if they show an outstanding depth of analysis combined with the ability to present their thoughts in a winsome and persuasive manner. The ultimate award winner is determined by separate judges based solely upon the final presentation and defense. This year’s GK Chesterton finalists are Emrey Taylor, Abigail Bussey, Caroline Pickle, Gray Bruner, Teagan Fikes, Jonathan Taylor, Sopris Oglesby, Trinity Cloud, Brady Chandler, Elle Chalmers, Mary Simpson, and Reid Wilson. They will deliver their thesis this Thursday and Friday. To get a glimpse into what this 13 year process looks like, be sure to watch the thesis video that was in Friday’s Landing.
