This Week in History
November 1, 1512 — Michelangelo officially unveiled the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It took him over four years to complete this masterpiece that was on a ceiling 68 feet above ground and about 12,000 square feet. Michelangelo wrote in his journal about how hard the work was as he described the paint that would drop into his eyes, his back and neck pain, and just the overall exhaustion he experienced from this magnificent work. The art depicts 9 scenes from the book of Genesis, including, the creation of Adam, the creation of Eve, the fall of man, and the great flood. For the artists out there, Michelangelo painted in fresco, which means that he painted directly onto wet plaster and once it dried, there was no fixing mistakes. Our juniors get to see this amazing sight in person on their Junior year Europe trip.
Did You Know?
Did you know that as Geneva’s campus is pruned, cut tree branches are donated to a farm with giraffes? Not only do we feed children’s souls, we feed the local giraffes.
Fun Faculty Fact
Our Logic School Academic Dean, Dr. Clay Carpenter, has had a pretty epic journey. Before working in education, he actually spent two years doing professional rodeo, competing in team roping of steers. He’s been riding horses since he was two years old and grew up roping — so basically, he’s been a cowboy his whole life. After retiring from rodeo, he went on to study archaeology in graduate school, doing cool stuff like excavations in Greece. You could say he’s kind of a modern-day Indiana Jones. But even with all those adventures, Dr. Carpenter says his favorite job is the one he’s doing now — being our Logic Academic Dean.
