This Week in History
On February 20, 1792 the Postal Service Act established the Post Office Department as a permanent federal institution. Through this Act, it solidified congressional control over the postal system, ensured mail privacy, and facilitated a free press by lowering newspaper rates. This provided the foundation for the modern US postal system, but the department was eventually replaced by the United States Postal Service in 1970. Through this change, the Postal Service became an independent establishment of the Executive Branch.
Did You Know?
Did you know that Love Thy Neighbor was started by Jessica Gombert in February of 2007? She felt like Valentine’s Day had become more about self and the desire to receive from others more than getting to love and serve those around us. Mrs. Gombert saw the opportunity to establish a school tradition where what students were learning could move from the mind to heart and to the feet. That the students would move with the knowledge of the love of God in their hearts to pour out to the community around them. As you may have joined in on last Wednesday, Geneva grammar students serve the community from visiting nursing homes and animal shelters to sweeping the streets of downtown Boerne, as they showed love in practical ways.
Fun Faculty Fact
4th grade teacher, Tonya Mowery grew up in the Blackeyed pea Capitol of the world, Athens Texas. She grew up riding horses, barrel racing, and played the flute in highschool. She was a cheerleader in both high school and junior college before she transferred over to TCU. She is a proud horned frog. In college she worked in the Oil Industry for the Bass Brothers, but since graduating from college, she has spent all of her professional time in Education. She is in her 26th year of teaching and 16th year at Geneva, where both of her sons graduated– Regan in 2019 and Grant in 2022. She was also a Younglife leader in the San Antonio area. Mrs. Mowery is giddy for all things King Arthur, which 4th graders started reading just last week, grammar, planting flowers, friendships, the oxford comma and Jesus! What more could you want in your child’s teacher? Mrs. Mowery says, “What I love most about my job are the relationships built with students, parents, and colleagues. Each conversation, hug, handshake, and smile fill my cup daily. There is immense joy in being around for several years getting to observe former Grammar students doing amazing things as they become Logic and Rhetoric students. It might be true that I often shed a joyful tear or two whenever I catch a glimpse of my former students around the campus!” We are so thankful for you joy and love, Mrs. Mowery!
