Welcome to the Fly By with Callyanne McCrea

School Theme for the Year

This year’s theme is Hope from Psalm 71:5:
“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.”

Key Reminders

  • Flowering of the Cross Assembly Join us for the Flowering of the Cross Assembly. Logic and Rhetoric’s will take place today March 30th Logic at 8:15am and Rhetoric at 9:30am. Grammar’s Flowering of the Cross will be Wednesday April 1st at 8:30am. At this assembly, a bare wooden cross is covered with colorful, fragrant flowers signifying the life and beauty that comes with receiving Jesus. Bring a flower to add as we reflect and rejoice over the miraculous sacrifice that took place on that old rugged cross.
  • Benefit Mark your calendar for this year’s Benefit taking place on April 30th and May 1st. Be sure to watch Head of School Leslie Moeller’s video that was sent out last week to hear the purpose of Benefit and what we plan to accomplish through it. My first day on the job was at last year’s Benefit and it was such a beautiful night. Make plans to be there.
  • Campus Beautification Thank You On behalf of GCL, thank you to all who contributed in the Spring Beautification Refresh. In case you missed it, or were unable to participate, there’s still time to check your zone to see if there are any more needs!

This Week in History

On April 4th, 1818, The US Congress passed the Flag Act of 1818. This Act finalized the discussion around how many stripes and stars there would be, and the overall design of the elements on the American Flag. It called for 13 stripes, representing the original colonies, and 20 stars representing the 20 states in the Union at the time. The act also specified that a star would be added each time a new state was admitted to the union on the Fourth of July following the state’s admission. After Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959, the flag was again altered, and the present 50-star flag with five rows of six stars and four rows of five stars became the nation’s official banner on July 4, 1960.

Fun Faculty Fact

Sixth Grade Earth Science Instructor, Laura Moerdyk, is one of 5 children and also has her own 5 children. Two of whom graduated from Geneva, Noelle in ‘23 and Raquel in ‘25 and her daughter Jessie is a current 8th grader. Mrs. Moerdyk played on her Highschool’s Olympic Development National team where she played both in Holland and Italy. One of the mornings there she woke up to God’s glorious Swiss Alps and couldn’t believe her eyes! She had never seen something so beautiful which grew her love for nature and hiking, as it draws her closer to our magnificent Creator. Mrs. Moerdyk is in her 6th year at Geneva after spending 5 years teaching in private and public school and 15 years homeschooling her children. After playing soccer at George Mason University, Mrs. Moerdyk moved back to the San Antonio area and has been here ever since. What she loves most about her job is seeing her students grow in their faith and their skills, both in academics and athletics. She loves working with like minded talented peers and being a part of this special community. We are so thankful you are a part of it Mrs. Moerdyk!
