This Week in History
On April 9th, 1860, the earliest known voice recording was made by French inventor Edourd-Leon Scott de Martinville by using his phonautograph to etch sound waves onto soot-blackened paper. It was a 20 second recording of a folk song which was not intended to be played back but rather to be a visual study of sound. The second time voice was recorded was with Thomas Edison’s phonograph 17 years later, as he recorded the nursery rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb . Now, 149 years later voice recordings are a common daily practice, or weekly practice for the Fly By!
Fun Faculty Fact
Kindergarten teacher, Lindsey Spacek, grew up in Austin, Texas and attended Texas A&M University. Whoop! She married her highschool sweetheart, who she was set up with by his highschool small group leader, Mrs. Spacek’s mom. After college, they moved to Nashville for her husband’s residency and 5 years later, made their way back to Texas where she has been in Boerne ever since. Mrs. Spacek taught in public school for 7 years before taking a 8 year break as she had her two daughters– Elizabeth who is a current 6th grader and Grace a current 2nd grader, both at Geneva. Mrs. Spacek is in her 4th year teaching here and she says that her favorite part of her job are the relationships formed with her students. She says they feel like her own children! Her students know her to have a different name for each of the subjects she teaches– Mrs. Mathcheck for math, Mrs. Phonicscheck for phonics, Mrs. Rockcheck for recess, and Mrs. Sciencecheck for yep, you guessed it, science. Mrs. Spacek brings joy everywhere and I loved being in her class.
